Look inside

This is Day 1

Day 1
Your Right Is to the Action
Bhagavad Gītā 2.47
karmaṇyevādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana
mā karmaphalahetur bhūr mā te saṅgo’stv akarmaṇi

“Your right is in the action only, never in its fruits. Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.”

Reflection

Most of us have a list.

Lose ten pounds. Read more books. Be a better friend, a better spouse, a better parent. Maybe finally start meditating.

We make the list with the best of intentions. Then a few weeks pass, we quietly disappoint ourselves, and the list is folded away in a drawer somewhere.

… the reflection continues

Today’s pearl

“Your job is to till the field. The rains belong to a larger force.”

Ask yourself

What is one thing I can do today, fully and well, without attaching to how it turns out?

Practice

Do it with your full attention. And as you finish, say to yourself: I did my part. The rest is not mine.

Inner prayer

Krishna, give me the strength to act with sincerity, and the wisdom to let go of results.

Day 1, word for word from the book (shortened reflection).

Why 108

One bead, one day, one pearl

108 is the number of beads on a mala. The book is not dated and not meant to be finished. Begin on any day, and if you miss a week, begin again where you left off.

The book grew out of the Arise Arjuna Foundation’s podcast on the Gita. Listeners kept writing in about a single line that had carried them through a hard week. This book gathers those lines.

A Diwali gift

Sweets last a week. This lasts 108 days.

After the mithai is gone, this stays.

  • For parents and elders who already love the Gītā
  • For a friend going through a hard year
  • For the one who has everything, and still asks for peace
